Overview

A Vacancy at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. WWL Teaching Hospitals is looking to appoint a full time Locum Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, to join the breast multidisciplinary team for 10 sessions per week, 6 month fixed term contract with potential for extension.The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, histopathologists, radiologists, advanced radiographers, specialized nurses and mammographers, as part of the breast team at WWL. The appointee will work closely with breast consultants, advanced nurse practitioners and cancer nurse specialists to deliver high quality outpatient services. There is a weekly MDT for screen-detected and symptomatic breast cancers, post-op results, metastatic patients and patients with a known breast cancer diagnosis undergoing additional imaging. The weekly plenary MDM is supported by a clinical and a medical oncologist from the Christie Hospital. Clinical commitments will include provision of new patient assessment clinics, results clinics (symptomatic, screening, post op), follow up clinics, MDT and theatre.Responsibilities

Provide specialist advice for patients for the prevention and diagnosis of illnesses referred to them.Accept personal responsibility for the total clinical care of patients referred to them.Collaborate with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all staff in the service.Contribute to and participate in the development of the service.Develop a special interest and work closely with the appropriate team to manage waiting lists and reduce waiting times in line with the Trust’s protocols and patient charter/service requirements.Be aware of all trials in the unit, actively promoting research within the unit, recruitment in trials and taking up opportunities to act as Principle Investigator for new studies.Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will be expected to have experience of managing benign and malignant breast disease in both the symptomatic and screening settings. Familiarity with, and competence in, all common breast surgical procedures, as well as oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery, is essential. It is expected that administrative work will be completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion. There is no on-call commitment with this post.Audit, Governance and Education

The breast unit has a well-structured audit and clinical governance programme. The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in local, regional, and national audits and to support the governance and quality improvement activities of the breast unit. All consultants within the team are expected to contribute to medical education, maintaining the reputation the Trust has for excellent training opportunities for medical students and junior doctors.Organisation and Location

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is committed to designing and providing services that meet the needs of the local population of Wigan and Leigh and surrounding areas. The Breast Care Services offer a comprehensive service across four hospital sites: the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wrightington Hospital, Leigh Infirmary and the Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan town centre. The Thomas Linacre Centre also hosts the Breast Screening Unit for Wigan and surrounding areas. The unit provides management of breast disease in line with Improving Outcomes Guidance, NHS Cancer Plan, Manchester Cancer Breast Pathway Board Guidelines and NICE guidelines.Support and Professional Development

Structured programme for development of clinical governance within the Trust, with governance sub-committee of the Trust Board. The Trust supports continuing professional development (CPD) with time and financial support. The Trust has arrangements to ensure annual appraisal and revalidation for surgeons. The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the medical contribution to management and follow the Trust’s policies and Standing Orders/Standing Financial Instructions.Additional Information
