About the Role
We are seeking Experienced Leading Miners to join a major shaft sinking and tunnelling project in the North West UK. This is a long-term opportunity offering up to five years of stable work on a complex underground infrastructure scheme.
Leading Miners will play a critical role in directing underground operations, coordinating teams, and ensuring safe and efficient progress in high-risk tunnelling and shaft environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate underground mining teams during shaft sinking and tunnelling operations
- Ensure safe excavation, ground support, and advance works are carried out to specification
- Supervise and support miners, ensuring adherence to method statements and lift plans
- Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and other site personnel to deliver production targets safely
- Monitor ground conditions and report hazards or changes immediately
- Oversee installation of temporary works, supports, and tunnel services
- Maintain strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental procedures
- Promote safe systems of work in confined and underground environments
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Leading Miner on shaft sinking and/or tunnelling projects
- Strong knowledge of underground excavation techniques and sequencing
- Confined Spaces certification (Medium/High Risk) - essential
- Valid medical certificate (safety-critical) - essential
- Strong leadership and communication skills in high-pressure environments
- Ability to work shifts, including nights and weekends
- Excellent awareness of underground safety procedures and risk management
Desirable
- Experience on large-scale civil engineering or infrastructure projects
- CSCS card or equivalent
- First Aid certification
- Experience with ground support systems, tunnelling plant, or TBM support operations
