Management Accountant  - Local Government / Public Sector | Hybrid Remote

Location: Hammersmith & Fulham, London / Hybrid Remote
Rate: £37.00 per hour Umbrella
Contract: Temporary, full time
Duration: Min 6 Months with oppotunity for Permanacy 
Working arrangement: Approximately 80% remote after induction
Reports to: Finance Manager

About the roleWe are seeking an experienced Management Accountant to join the Finance team of a London local authority.

You will provide financial advice and management accounting support across a range of council services, working closely with budget holders, service managers and senior stakeholders. The role will include budgeting, forecasting, budget monitoring, financial analysis, grant claims, statutory returns and year-end accounts.

The successful candidate will have experience within local government, the NHS or another complex public-sector organisation.

The role is approximately 80% remote once established. However, you will be expected to attend the office for most of the first two weeks to complete your induction, meet the team and learn the Council’s systems and processes.

Key responsibilities

• Manage finance activity for allocated service areas.
  
  
• Support budget setting, monitoring, forecasting and year-end closure.
  
  
• Analyse financial performance, variances, risks and pressures.
  
  
• Provide clear financial advice to managers and budget holders.
  
  
• Prepare reports, forecasts and financial analysis.
  
  
• Complete grant claims, funding claims and statutory returns.
  
  
• Support financial governance and compliance with regulations.
  
  
• Maintain effective financial controls, systems and procedures.
  
  
• Identify process improvements and provide practical solutions.
  
  
• Use Excel and financial systems to analyse and present financial information.
  
  
• Support finance projects and provide a high standard of customer service.
  
  

At the higher level, you may also be responsible for drafting financial comments, challenging assumptions, implementing improvements and supervising or supporting finance staff.

About youYou will ideally have:

• Experience in local government, the NHS or a similar public-sector organisation.
  
  
• Strong experience of management accounting, budgeting and forecasting.
  
  
• Experience advising budget holders and non-finance colleagues.
  
  
• Knowledge of financial governance, controls and reporting.
  
  
• Excellent numerical, analytical and communication skills.
  
  
• Strong Excel skills; Power BI experience would be advantageous.
  
  
• The ability to work independently in a primarily remote environment.
  
  
• AAT, Accounting Technician or equivalent relevant experience.
  
  
• ACA, ACCA or CIPFA qualification, or progress towards one, is desirable.
  
  
• Availability to attend on site for most of the first two weeks.
