Job overviewThis key role will provide professional nursing leadership and management of the research team comprising research nurses, practitioners, data managers and research assistants and will be responsible for the development of staff and the research portfolio within the overall RDU1 and 9 structure. The Clinical Research Matron will drive the expansion of the RDUs and underpin this with commercial and grant income to enhance Neurosciences and Paediatrics research at King''s. Particular emphasis is the need to ensure that all staff recognise their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
Main duties
The Clinical Research Matron will be responsible for the line management of the research team and will lead on specific projects (staff training, induction, systems) as well as providing general support to the RandD Leads and Investigators. These include managing finances, resources and staff - maintaining the overall standard of care for patients at all times.
Demonstrate the ability to negotiate with professional colleagues for co-ordinated care within the research and Clinical Trials Service and establish a profile to influence existing and new relationships within and beyond the organisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe Clinical Research Matron will contribute to the development of the departments'' research portfolio and oversee the safe and ethical implementation and delivery of all studies conducted. The post holder will work to ICH-GCP standards and the Research Governance Framework.
Leadership: Have overall responsibility for and provide leadership to RDU1 and 9, coordinating the appropriate research support for projects that enhance the clinical service at Kings College Hospital.
To write, maintain and implement operational policies and procedures (SOPs) within the unit.
To develop operational systems to ensure that clinical research is facilitated to the highest ethical and regulatory standards.
Management: Provide expert advice to investigators and research teams to ensure adherence to relevant codes of conduct, regulations, policies, protocols and good clinical practice.
Develop, monitor and reassess systems to ensure research is carried out in accordance with Good Clinical Practice and NHS governance.
Ensure accurate research and sample records are maintained and conduct trend analysis on the unit''s activities.
Clinical Practice: Produce and maintain an up-to-date clinical trials portfolio for reference for all clinical staff in the department.
Provide support for RDU 1 and 9 research teams, including covering clinics and research appointments where necessary.
Ensure all staff are competent in their clinical and non-clinical activities, providing training and mentoring when needed.
Education and Professional Leadership: Educate nursing and medical staff on principles of clinical research, data collection, patient consent and concerns such as possible side effects for specific trials.
Educate patients, relatives and carers on possible side effects and appropriate actions.
Person specificationEducation and QualificationsEssential criteria
NMC Level 1 Registered General Nurse
Master''s degree or equivalent senior level research experience
Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
GCP qualification
Desirable criteria
PRINCE 2 or other recognised project management qualification
ExperienceEssential criteria
Experience of leading research training, support and supervision
Prior experience of research studies with minimal supervision
Demonstrates awareness of current research
Experience of costing trials and budget management
Managerial/team leader experience
Knowledge
In depth Knowledge of ICH-GCP
Understanding of Regulatory requirements pertaining to trials
Able to demonstrate a sound understanding of NHS Research Governance requirements and the research process
Ability to work across boundaries, integrating with multidisciplinary staff in relation to research trials
Venepuncture and cannulation
Budget management skills and experience
Desirable criteria
Report writing and presentational skills
Knowledge of project management methodology
Able to develop business and development plans
