Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer
£40,000–£45,000
Hertfordshire – Near Royston / Cambridge
Enjoy designing a product, building the prototype and finding out whether it works?
This is an opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys combining CAD design with hands-on engineering, prototype development and practical problem-solving.
We''re recruiting on behalf of an established and growing manufacturer operating within the construction and engineering sector. The business specialises in developing innovative, technically engineered solutions and is looking to strengthen its design engineering team.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you''ll be involved in the complete product development lifecycle, taking initial concepts through design, prototyping, testing and ultimately into manufacture.
This isn''t purely a desk-based CAD position. You''ll have the opportunity to get hands-on with prototypes, test your designs and develop practical solutions to real engineering challenges.
Working alongside an experienced engineering team, you''ll contribute to the development of new products while improving existing designs to enhance performance, functionality and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce accurate 2D technical drawings and 3D CAD models, ideally using Autodesk Inventor.
- Develop mechanical designs and engineered solutions from initial concept through to production.
- Build, assemble and modify physical prototypes, applying practical engineering knowledge.
- Apply an understanding of engineering principles, materials and manufacturing processes to develop practical, cost-effective designs.
- Conduct product testing, evaluate performance and implement design improvements.
- Investigate technical challenges, troubleshoot problems and develop innovative engineering solutions.
- Prepare technical drawings, specifications and supporting documentation for manufacture.
What We''re Looking For
- CAD Design Experience: Strong 2D and 3D CAD capabilities, ideally using Autodesk Inventor or similar mechanical design software.
- Practical Engineering Skills: Hands-on engineering experience, with an understanding of how mechanical components and engineered products are manufactured and assembled.
- Product Development: Previous experience designing, developing and building mechanical products or prototypes, ideally taking concepts through to manufacture.
- Relevant Industry Experience: A background in mechanical design engineering, construction products, manufacturing, product development or a similar engineering environment.
- Problem-Solving Ability: A practical, solutions-focused approach, with the ability to investigate engineering challenges, test ideas and improve designs.
Salary & Benefits
- £40,000–£45,000 basic salary, depending on experience.
- 31 days'' annual leave, including bank holidays.
- Holiday purchase and sale scheme.
- Five days'' fully paid sick leave.
- Health insurance scheme, including discounted gym membership and appointment reimbursements.
- NEST pension scheme.
- Free lunches provided.
- Free on-site parking.
- Birthday voucher.
- Opportunity to work on new product development projects, from initial concept through to manufacture.
