The Role
An established engineering business is looking to appoint a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take a lead role in the delivery of complex mechanical engineering projects.
You will take ownership of mechanical design deliverables from initial concept through detailed design, testing and completion. Working closely with the Engineering Team Lead and wider cross-functional teams, you will ensure designs meet customer specifications, technical standards, quality requirements and project objectives.
As a senior member of the engineering team, you will also lead technical design reviews, provide guidance and mentorship to other engineers, and contribute to the continued improvement of engineering processes and product capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design activities from concept through to detailed design, testing and completion.
- Produce designs that meet customer specifications and relevant engineering standards.
- Develop and improve existing products to enhance performance, capability, reliability and cost effectiveness.
- Support the design and development of new products, including concept design, detailed design, prototyping and qualification testing.
- Produce high-quality 2D manufacturing drawings and 3D CAD models.
- Carry out engineering calculations, including stress analysis, fluid dynamics and thermodynamic calculations where required.
- Lead and contribute to technical design reviews.
- Produce technical reports covering designs, calculations, development activities and testing.
- Select appropriate materials in line with customer requirements and international standards.
- Supervise and support product testing and qualification activities.
- Complete and implement non-conformance reports and associated engineering actions.
- Respond to customer requests for engineering drawings and technical information.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding technical capabilities, manufacturing requirements and applicable standards.
- Provide technical engineering support to sales, manufacturing, assembly, service, quality, suppliers and customers.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
- Support continuous improvement across engineering processes and design practices.
- Participate in relevant external audits.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with company health, safety, quality and operational procedures.
About You
The successful candidate will be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in the concept and detailed design of mechanical equipment or components.
Essential / Preferred Experience
- HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering as a minimum; BSc/BEng Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is preferred.
- At least 5 years'' post-graduate engineering experience, including concept and detailed mechanical design.
- Strong 2D and 3D CAD capability, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Fully proficient in producing detailed 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Experience completing mechanical engineering calculations and design verification.
- Knowledge of stress analysis calculations to ASME VIII, API 6A and/or API 17D.
- Understanding of fluid dynamic and thermodynamic calculations.
- Knowledge or practical exposure to API 6A and API 17D.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes including forging, machining, coating, fitting, welding and fabrication.
- Working towards or already holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status through the IMechE would be advantageous.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Full UK driving licence.

Strong communication and time-management skills are important, alongside the ability to mentor engineers and communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
