The Fleet Services Division plays a critical role in enabling frontline services to operate effectively. By providing a well-maintained, legally compliant, and increasingly sustainable fleet, we support the delivery of key council functions while helping to reduce environmental impact and contribute to the city’s carbon reduction ambitions.
From waste collection and street cleansing to highways maintenance and environmental services, our fleet is essential to delivering frontline services across the city.
What the role will involve?

As Workshop Operations Manager, you will lead the delivery of a high-performing vehicle maintenance operation responsible for a diverse fleet of over 700 vehicles, plant and specialist equipment. You will ensure the fleet remains safe, Operators Licence compliant, reliable and available to support critical council services, minimising downtime and maximising operational efficiency.
Direct reports include Workshop Controllers and a skilled team of technicians, you will drive service improvement, promote a strong culture of safety and compliance, and support the Council's ambitions for fleet sustainability and decarbonisation.
Your leadership will be key in maintaining a resilient, customer-focused service that delivers value for money while ensuring essential services can continue to operate effectively for the people of Newcastle.

Who are we looking for?
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced workshop professional looking to take the next step in their career.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record and recent experience managing an HGV workshop or fleet maintenance operation, to achieve the effective & efficient maintenance, diagnostics, & repair of the council’s Large Goods Vehicle (HGV) fleet, plant / horticultural equipment and light vehicles.
This is a new role specialising in heavy good vehicle maintenance, Including a strong knowledge of DVSA regulations and Operator Licence compliance, within a multidisciplinary operation, managing all the workshops on the whole site, HGV’s, Plant, Horticultural, & Light vehicle maintenance.
We are looking for someone with the skills & experience using fleet maintenance management systems to manage the scheduling, servicing, inspections and MOT’s, to uphold regulatory compliance of the council’s vehicle fleet and workshop accreditation. Whilst managing workshop staff and the compliance of assets such as workshop buildings and workshop equipment.
You will possess demonstrable experience in managing performance, ensuring operational requirements are consistently met within the workshop budget, while maintaining a safe, healthy and secure working environment autonomously to a high standard. Through strong leadership and effective collaboration, you will drive high standards of performance, customer service and contract delivery.
