Repayable if the candidate leaves within 12 months of recruitment.UHCW are looking to appoint an experienced and dynamic leader to the role of Head of Medical Equipment and Bioengineering Services (MEBS). The post holder leads a large team of clinical engineers and technologists providing medical equipment services to the Trust and contracted partners. The post holder is the Trust lead for medical devices, oversees all aspects of medical equipment management and plays a key role in equipment procurement.University Hospital in Coventry was opened in mid-2006. This 1250 bed hospital is one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals in the country. Under the terms of a PFI contract, MEBS is responsible for the management of all the non-imaging medical equipment within the Trust and plays a lead role in specifying, evaluating, and coordinating lifecycle replacement of this equipment. MEBS has extensive preventative and corrective maintenance responsibilities. The total value of the equipment is in the region of £35m. The department is accredited to ISO 13485:2016 and EN 13485.This is repayable if the candidate leaves within 12 months of recruitment.MEBS is part of the Trust’s Clinical Support Services Group. The post holder is professionally responsible to the Director of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering. In conjunction with the heads of the Radiotherapy, Radiation Safety and Nuclear Medicine departments and under the leadership of the director, the post holder will develop and oversee clinical scientist/engineer and clinical technologist training and have the opportunity to undertake teaching and research and development.Applications are invited from registered clinical engineers with significant experience. Evidence of the effective management of a large team providing a comprehensive equipment service is essential. Manage and oversee, within the agreed strategic objectives of the Department of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering, the following: the operational activities of the Clinical Engineers, Clinical Technologists and support staff.Define job roles, recruitment, appraisal, career development, training, absence, grievance and discipline for all departmental staff.Departmental policy and promotion of service development. Non-staff budget (in excess of £200,000).Staff budget of the Equipment Management Service (in excess of £1M). Supplies and equipment procurement.Oversee the Trust’s obligations under the PFI contract for the procurement and maintenance of medical equipment owned by Project Co (total value -£35M).Service Level Agreements with client organisations.With the Director of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering, act as the Trust Lead for Medical Equipment on the Capital Procurement Review Group; coordinate with Group Managers, Finance Managers/Directors, Senior Accountants and other Senior Trust Staff.The performance and development of the Medical Devices Safety Team.Equipment Management and Quality Control
Ensure Medical Equipment is maintained to agreed standards and specifications per ISO 13485:2016.Maintain MEBS Quality System registration and compliance.Authorise commissioning, calibration and continuing quality control procedures for medical equipment, in line with regulations and Trust policy.Identify equipment usage shortfalls and include in the Trust Capital Equipment program or PFI replacement scheme.Advise senior managers, medical staff and others on specifications and suitability of equipment prior to purchase; including life support and highly complex equipment where required.Oversee investigation of incidents or alerts relating to medical devices (Datix, MHRA, etc.) and provide written reports and actions to ensure safe device use.Maintain and develop KPIs for MEBS in line with Trust vision and strategy.Policies and Procedures
Determine strategic objectives and professional policies for MEBS within the Department’s objectives.Create and review equipment and service related Trust policies and departmental policies and procedures.Ensure procedures comply with statutory regulations and MHRA guidance; impact on Trust staff and client organisations.For further details please see the attached job description.This advert closes on Tuesday 7 Oct 2025
