Setting Out Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Setting Out Engineer to support the delivery of a technically challenging tunnelling and civil engineering project in the Dartford area.
The role will focus on setting out, dimensional control, surveying and as-built verification across tunnelling, shafts, micro-tunnelling, auger boring and associated civil engineering works.

The Role
You will be responsible for ensuring works are constructed in the correct position, alignment, level and orientation, within specified project tolerances.

You will work closely with the Site Manager, Project Manager, construction teams and QA/QC teams, providing accurate technical and survey information to support safe and efficient project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out accurate setting out for tunnels, shafts, micro-tunnelling, auger boring, sheeted pits and associated civils works.
• Establish and maintain surface and underground survey control networks.
• Transfer survey control from surface level into underground works.
• Set out tunnel alignments, levels, chainages, gradients, profiles and structures.
• Monitor excavation and lining works against design tolerances.
• Carry out dimensional control and independent survey checks.
• Produce survey calculations, site sketches, drawings and schedules.
• Complete and maintain as-built survey information.
• Monitor and report any deviation from specified alignment or tolerances.
• Manage and calibrate surveying and measurement equipment.
• Trace and record underground utilities using Cat & Genny and radio detection equipment.
• Maintain accurate tunnelling, ground condition and construction records.
• Produce daily survey reports, check sheets, as-built drawings and monitoring reports.
• Support TQs, RFIs, method statements and ITPs with accurate survey information.
• Manage survey activities in line with the construction programme.

Experience Required
We are looking for candidates with strong setting out and site engineering experience within civil engineering or major infrastructure projects.
Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly relevant:

• Tunnelling
• Deep shafts
• Micro-tunnelling
• Auger boring
• Water and wastewater infrastructure
• Underground utilities
• Deep drainage
• Heavy civil engineering

Candidates should be confident with survey control, dimensional control, setting out, as-built surveys and monitoring works against design tolerances.
Strong CAD experience is also required.

Experience using modern surveying equipment and software would be expected, alongside a strong understanding of:

• Total stations and surveying equipment
• Survey control networks
• CAD
• As-built surveying
• Dimensional control
• Underground utility detection
• QA/QC documentation
• ITPs and project specifications
• Construction drawings and technical information

The successful candidate will be technically strong, accurate and comfortable working within a busy tunnelling or heavy civils environment.

You will need to communicate effectively with site teams and management, maintain accurate survey records and be confident identifying and resolving alignment, tolerance and technical issues.

This opportunity would suit a Setting Out Engineer, Site Engineer or Senior Site Engineer with previous tunnelling, utilities, water or heavy civils experience.
