Are you determined to further your skills and career in Oncology care?You will be a proactive, motivated and a dynamic leader with the ability to promote high standards of care, developing and supporting the nursing team in the clinical area.Burdett Coutts Ward is a 15 bedded unit specialising in the care of patients from a variety of tumour groups undergoing different oncology treatments including: Major surgery, chemotherapy and supportive therapies.As a Registered Nurse, you will have significant experience in Oncology nursing and a commitment to providing high quality specialist care. Your expertise will be backed by a first level degree, a specialist or oncology qualification and appropriate experience in mentoring staff and students. Previous experience in chemotherapy administration would be a bonus.You will be expected to be responsible for managing a team of nurses within the ward and be responsible for their training and development under the guidance of the Ward sister.A variety of opportunities for professional development are available and indeed encouraged, within the Hospital and Royal Marsden School.Main duties of the job
To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans.To participate fully in the day to day organization and running of clinical trials including the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison as required with trial sponsors.Detailed job description and main responsibilities
For further information on this role, please see the attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification:To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include:Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment. Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained. To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge / transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals through care planning.As a specialist cancer nurse, to assess the educational and informational needs of the patient and family. This includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of nursing care and the likely outcome.Person specification
Education/Qualifications
NMC RegistrationEvidence of ongoing professional developmentRMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointmentQualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent) Recognised teaching qualificationExperience
