The Opportunity
We''re looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a specialist building services consultancy and strengthen their growing Operational Assets team in Manchester. This position is ideal for a Chartered, or soon-to-be Chartered, engineer who thrives on solving complex challenges in existing buildings and delivering sustainable, energy-efficient solutions.
You''ll work with a broad range of clients across commercial offices, residential developments, healthcare facilities, education estates, industrial and retail properties, helping them improve building performance and move towards net zero carbon targets. The role combines hands-on mechanical design, property consultancy, and strategic advice, making it varied and rewarding.
What You''ll Do
- Lead the design and delivery of mechanical building services projects across multiple sectors
- Carry out design, calculations, specifications, and technical drawings through all RIBA stages
- Advise clients on retrofit, refurbishment, energy optimisation, and decarbonisation strategies
- Deliver consultancy services such as: condition and due diligence surveys, PPM schedules, asset registers, EPCs, dilapidations, and troubleshooting reports
- Oversee commissioning, site inspections, and post-occupancy performance reviews
- Prepare clear technical reports including feasibility studies and maintenance strategies
- Develop and maintain client relationships while contributing to work winning and business growth
- Support, mentor, and supervise junior engineers, helping to grow the team''s capability
What We''re Looking For
- Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer (CEng or close to chartership)
- Solid experience in mechanical building services design engineering
- Background in existing buildings, refurbishment, and retrofit projects
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, sustainable design, and low-carbon technologies
- Familiarity with UK regulations, CIBSE guides, and relevant EU standards
- Strong organisational and communication skills with the ability to manage deadlines
- Track record of leading teams, delivering projects, and engaging clients
