OverviewWe are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive consultant to join our Neonatal Consultant team. This post will be 10 PAs. The appointee will be based at Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital where our Neonatal Unit is situated and the post holder may be required to work at any of the trust''s sites. On call duties (non-resident) and service weeks will be for Neonates only. On call frequency is approximately 1 in 7.5.

Qualifications and eligibilityApplications are welcomed from candidates who have MRCPCH (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council''s Specialist Register in Paediatrics or Neonates, or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. CESR applicants must be on the specialist register at the point of application. In addition applicants will be expected to have clinical training and experience equivalent of at least 12 months middle grade training experience in a designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or completed Special Interest (SPIN) module in Neonates. They will also be expected to have experience in echocardiography with an interest in developing Neonatal Cardiology expertise.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be expected to: Contribute to the Neonatal service including neonatal service weeks, on calls and Neonatal Cardiology and Baby Clinics.

Take part in education, training and supervision of Neonatal Junior Doctors and ANNPs.

Perform an appropriate lead role to support the Neonatal Service.

Demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance.

Develop Neonatal Cardiology expertise, to support the existing Neonatal Cardiology service.

The Neonatal Unit has dedicated medical cover at all levels (Tiers 1, 2 and 3) and at all times 24/7. Neonatal consultants provide exclusive cover for the neonatal unit on a daily basis. This ensures 24 hour cover as follows: A ''Hot-week'' consultant covers ITU/HDU 0830 to 1730 (Weekdays-Mondays to Fridays) with ''on call'' provision thereafter. Second ''LDU/TC Service'' consultant covers LDU/TC 08:30 - 14:30 (Weekdays-Mondays to Fridays). Weekends are split into Fridays/ Sundays and Saturdays: Consultant on site 08:30-14:30 with ''on call'' provision thereafter.

Service weeks and on call frequency are expected to be approximately 1 in 7.5.

Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesInformation about the Specialty

Our Neonatal Unit is a Local Neonatal Unit (Level 2) and has capacity for 29 designated cots with 5 Intensive care cots, 5 High Dependency cots and 19 Special care cots. There are also 4 designated transitional care cots in the postnatal ward, which by July 2025 will increase to 8. Neonates are part of the Perinatal Directorate which sits within the Black Country Local Maternity Neonatal System. The unit is part of the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. Neonatal services run dedicated baby clinics, neurodevelopmental and cardiac clinics at MMUH and Sandwell.

Our care pathway includes babies of 27 weeks gestation and above, birthweight of 800g and above and short term ( The neonatal unit has high activity and undertakes about 3000 days intensive/high dependency care, 5270 special care days and 3200 transitional care days. At MMUH there is space to increase cot capacity if required in the future and the new unit meets all the British Association of Perinatal Medicine specifications. Neonatal and Maternity Badgernet is used as our electronic patient record.

Entry on the Specialist Register in Neonates (or CCT expected within 6 months from the date of interview)

MRCPCH by examination or equivalent

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Neonates

Fulfils all other essential criteria as per Personal Specification

Special interest that complements the existing consultants or has special interest in Cardiology

Formal training in teaching

Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Neonates

Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years

Evidence of having undertaken original research
