Role and ResponsibilitiesJob Description

TheMechanicalHandling Engineerwill work collaboratively with the Customer within theMechanicalHandling and Building Services teams to providetechnical supporton non–nuclearandnuclearmechanicalhandling assets and facilities within the Devonport Dockyard site; for example, cranes,lifting equipmentand maintenance facilities. This role may include but is not limited to: supporting theMechanical Engineeringlead in key delivery projects, providing professional and flexibletechnical supportto the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extantmechanicalhandling assets, ensuring that allmechanicalaspects of facility modifications, redesigns and new infrastructure are scoped, developed and delivered to meet operational requirements, safety standards and compliance obligations.

Responsibilities

Support theMechanical Engineeringlead and customer to understand requirements and providemechanical engineeringsupport.

Periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities. Specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications.

Scope,designand propose modifications to existing assets or new facilities based on customer needs and system limitations. Engage in the full lifecycle development ofmechanicalprojects, fromconceptual designthrough to implementation and maintenance.

Maintaining configuration oftechnicaldrawings and documentation. Assessing and approvingtechnical documentationprior to customer submission, ensuringtechnical, regulatory and safety considerations have been addressed.

Work with other disciplines, teams and stakeholders to delivermechanicalsupport for multi–discipline infrastructure projects. Support theplanning and executionof installation, commissioning and testing phases as needed.

Providetechnicalinput toproject documentation, risk assessments and progress reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelors degree (minimum) inMechanical Engineeringor a closely related discipline; Masters degree or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred.

Typically 3+ years of relevantmechanical engineeringexperience in a highly regulated industry (e.g.,nuclear, maritime, infrastructure,oil and gasetc. ).

Knowledge and awareness of cranes, crane safety and associatedmechanicalhandling systems Proficient with electrical CAD software and tools such asETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.

Proficiency in understanding/production of electrical/mechanical engineeringdrawings

Proficiency in understanding/production of hand calculations/FEA

Experience in thedesignprocess and producing evidence of thedesignand substantiation of systems and components.

Ability to work in ambiguous environments, working with a customer–first approach and providing flexibility to changing requirements.

Desirable Attributes

Good Communication skills – Makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.

Understanding ofnuclearindustry and/or other safety critical environments. Experience in working in a dockyard, marine, Defence or MoD environments particularly with asset lifecycle support.

Experience of cranes/lifting equipmentand crane operations, especially safety critical and safety related systems.

Knowledge of electrical/mechanical/hydraulic systemsas typical to cranes and hauling equipment

Knowledge ofmechanicalbuilding services, includingHVAC, compressed air, water systems and thermal/fluid systems
