Electrical Engineer (Building Services)
Nelson Permanent Placements are recruiting for a Building Services electrical engineer to work mobile on live purpose built student accomodation around Leeds and the surrounding area.
The role is delivering planned preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, statutory compliance and small works. Keeping electrical installations safe, compliant and and fully certified.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out electrical PPM to SFG20 schedules, including distribution boards, switchgear, lighting, small power, containment and plant electrical supplies. Carry out emergency lighting testing and maintenance to BS 5266, including monthly functional and annual duration tests, and keep log books up to date.
- Diagnose and repair reactive electrical faults within contracted response times, including tripping circuits, lighting failures, power loss and faults on plant, pumps and fans. Complete remedial works arising from EICRs and other inspections, including C1, C2 and FI observations, prioritising safety-critical items (if qualified to do so)
- Provide electrical support to other disciplines, including isolations and electrical fault-finding on mechanical, HVAC and water plant.
- Assist with fire alarm, door access, nurse call / disabled refuge and other low-voltage systems where competent to do so. Deliver small works and installations, including lighting upgrades (e.g. LED retrofits), circuit alterations and additional power.
- Record all work accurately and in real time on the mobile job management / CAFM system, including asset data, readings, photographs, defects and parts used, so that compliance records are audit-ready. Identify and report remedial works, producing clear defect descriptions and, where requested, supporting the preparation of quotations for additional works.
- Work safely under HPS safe systems of work, including RAMS, permits to work, safe isolation and lock-out/tag-out, and complete dynamic risk assessments on site.
- Liaise professionally with client site teams, residents and other contractors, recognising that sites are occupied residential buildings and minimising disruption to students.
Qualifications and experience: essential
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services (or equivalent time-served apprenticeship), including AM2.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) to the current amendment. Inspection and testing qualification (C&G 2391, 2394/2395 or equivalent). ECS Gold Card (Installation or Maintenance Electrician) or equivalent.
- Full UK driving licence (company van provided).
- Right to work in the UK and willingness to undergo a DBS check (roles involve working in occupied student residences).
Qualifications and experience: desirable
- Experience working under an NICEIC or NAPIT approved contractor scheme.
- Emergency lighting (BS 5266) and fire alarm (BS 5839) maintenance experience or qualifications.
- Proven experience of commercial electrical maintenance, testing and fault-finding, with confident certification on EICRs.Experience of controls, BMS or motor control panels. EV charging installation qualification (C&G 2921 or equivalent).
- IPAF, PASMA and HV/LV awareness or authorised person training. Previous experience in a multi-site FM or PBSA environment.
