About the role

Can you remain calm, keep boundaries clear and help a pupil feel ready to try again? Teach Now is seeking an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant for an all-through special school in Barnet, supporting primary and secondary pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), including pupils with trauma-related needs.

The setting places relationships and predictable routines at the centre of learning. As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils who may find trust, transitions or classroom demands difficult. The role combines learning support with co-regulation, restorative conversations and practical help to re-engage with school life.

Key responsibilities

  • Support learning in class, through 1:1 work and in targeted small groups.
  • Follow individual support plans and use agreed de-escalation strategies.
  • Help pupils recognise emotions, access regulation breaks and return to learning.
  •  Support transitions, break times and peer relationships with calm, consistent boundaries.
  • Record concerns and progress objectively and work closely with teaching and pastoral staff.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting SEND pupils in a school is essential, including SEMH and distressed behaviour.
  • An understanding of trauma-informed practice and behaviour as communication.
  • Sound professional boundaries and confidence responding calmly to dysregulation; relevant training is welcome.

You must be based in the UK, have the right to work in the UK and be able to commit to a long-term placement. Visa sponsorship is not available. A strong commitment to safeguarding is essential.

What this role offers

  • A role combining academic support with pupils’ emotional and social development.
  •  The opportunity to build trusting relationships over time.
  • Experience supporting different age groups within an all-through special school.
