The Role
We are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Apheresis Outpatients Unit. This is a full-time, permanent position, working 37.5 hours per week across 7.5 or 9-hour shifts. The unit is open from 08:30 to 18:00 and currently operates five apheresis machines, where donors and patients attend for peripheral blood stem cell donation. You will be the nurse in charge, leading the day-to-day running of the unit, ensuring safe, coordinated, and high-quality outpatient care. You will also mentor junior nurses and healthcare assistants, contribute to service development, and work with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure clinical excellence and patient experience.
Key Duties
Work autonomously as the nurse in charge and as part of the Apheresis Unit teamDeliver safe, evidence-based care to patients and donors in line with NMC standardsRecognise and respond to life-threatening situations or apheresis citrate reactionsOrganise and prioritise workload in line with clinical needsProvide guidance, mentoring, and supervision to junior staff, students, and healthcare assistantsBuild strong relationships within the multidisciplinary team, deputising for senior nurses as requiredMaintain professional knowledge and clinical skills in oncology, haematology, and apheresis practicesEnsure compliance with health and safety and data protection policies at all times
Skills and Experience
We are looking for a motivated and professional nurse with:Registered Nurse status with a valid NMC pinPost-registration experience in oncology, haematology, or apheresis at a senior levelExperience working within an outpatient settingStrong clinical skills including venipuncture, cannulation, venesection, and use of central and peripheral venous access devicesExcellent communication and interpersonal skills to support patients, donors, and colleagues
Desirable
A post-registration course in chemotherapy or haematologyExperience with Terumo/Optia apheresis machinesLeadership or management qualificationsSkills in difficult IV cannulation using ultrasound
