Overview

Senior Staff Nurse – In-Patient Unit (IPU)Lead our multi-professional IPU team to deliver high standards of end-of-life care. Applications via Princess Alice Hospice website. Vacancies are subject to eligibility to work in the UK.We are a small organisation and cannot employ individuals outside the UK where we cannot obtain a work permit or visa sponsorship.ResponsibilitiesClinical

Undertake assessment of patient and family/carer needs and discuss these with the MDT; provide specialist palliative care nursing within individualised care pathways; implement care based on assessments; communicate changes to the MDT; ensure holistic needs (physiological, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural) are met; understand and respond to therapeutic intervention needs; facilitate continuity of care through clear communication; complete and improve nursing documentation; enable patient/family to participate in care planning; assist with teaching and preparation for palliative care needs.

Managerial

In the absence of senior nursing staff, take charge of the IPU in rotation; maintain skilled nursing presence to support MDT working; foster a supportive environment and staff morale; act as mentor/supervisor/assessor for new and junior staff; ensure observance of Hospice policies; collaborate to achieve clinical standards and participate in audits; promote a safe clinical environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Educational

Maintain awareness of advances in palliative care; educate and train junior staff; respond to educational needs of MDT with knowledge of treatment and care; mentor/assess students and junior staff; carry out staff appraisals and develop areas of special interest to share knowledge.

Professional

Maintain NMC registration and adhere to the NMC Code; meet revalidation requirements; participate in staff appraisal, performance and supervision; contribute to IPU culture aligned with organisational values; engage in leadership/managerial development opportunities.

Other Responsibilities

Undertake other duties as required and work across hospice locations as needed; lead by example in line with Hospice values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence.

Qualifications and ExperienceExperience (Essential)

Relevant palliative care post-registration experience or equivalent in a Senior Staff Nurse role.

Experience of leading a nursing team.

Experience of mentorship for junior staff.

Skills and Aptitudes (Desirable)

Excellent written and verbal communication; clear, sensitive articulation; strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively in an emotionally demanding environment; computer literacy; willingness to develop teaching and assessing skills; leadership within a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications (Essential)

Registered Nurse with the NMC.

Palliative care qualification (e.g., ECEPC).

Evidence of ongoing professional development in specialist palliative care; assessor training; post-registration courses; diploma or degree level study.

Personal Qualities (Desirable)

Understanding of Hospice philosophy and specialist palliative care services; commitment to clinical supervision and reflective practice; ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team; willingness to undertake internal rotation; shift flexibility; alignment with the Hospice Mission, Vision and Values.
