end of November 2025, required experienced as such, all valid Certificates ( Master unlimited ), contract 2 months on/off.Licence and QualificationsRequired – Chief Mate UnlimitedDesired – Master Mariner UnlimitedLine ManagerStaff CaptainDirect Reports2nd Officers3rd OfficersQuartermastersDeck CadetsDuties and ResponsibilitiesIn normal operating conditions the watches consist of 2 certified deck officers and 2 quartermasters. You will be the senior of the two watchkeepers (SOOW). You will normally hold the charge at sea unless relieved by another SOOW or a more senior officer. You shall assign yourself, or be assigned, and assign to others any roles you and they are qualified to hold under VS22 (BRM Directive), which you should be familiar with and follow in letter and spirit. Your direct reports may have responsibilities not specifically listed in this job description. You are responsible for their conduct and their satisfactory discharge of these duties and must give support, and issue whatever instruction or guidance is required to support them in pursuit of those duties. Where your own Responsibilities are supported by another Deck Watch keeper, you retain overall accountability and should issue clear guidance and instruction on how the workload will be spread and what your expectations are.Complete objective setting and appraisals for all direct reports. Provide regular feedback on expectations and performance.Assist the Staff Captain with Responsibility #10 “Key System and Safe” by auditing the presence and use of keys issued to the Bridge.Assist the Staff Captain with Responsibility #18 “Log Books and Shipping Legislation” by reviewing deck log entries and guiding the quality thereof; instruct Deck Watchkeepers on additional entries as needed.Responsible for Cadet Training (Responsibility #20): meet newly joined cadets to assess experience, draw up training schedules, brief team to ensure safe work, monitor cadet progress, sign TRB tasks, and provide feedback.Responsibility #21 “Navigation Planning and Execution” (passage planning): prepare voyage plans for Master’s approval, provide navigational information for ENCs and voyage plans, prepare alternatives, inform Master of progress, prepare cruise planner with ETAs/ETDs, ensure timely communication of speeds and timings, ensure ENCs/publications are up to date, and prepare information for full voyage appraisal.Assist with Navigation Planning and Execution (Responsibility #21) for navigation equipment, monitoring instrument condition, initiating corrective actions, and reporting unresolved deficiencies; supported by 2nd Officer (Navigation) and 3rd/4th Officer (Nav Support).Responsibility #22 “Charts and Publications”: ensure latest ENCs and required publications are available; supported by 2nd Officer (Navigation).Responsibility #23 “Bridge Watchkeeping”: model professional watchkeeping, provide feedback, and conduct drills with the team including Quartermasters for emergency readiness.Responsibility #26 “Communications”: ensure Deck Watchkeepers maintain and test GMDSS equipment and are competent in routine and emergency use.Additional DutiesEnsure planned and unplanned maintenance within their discipline is conducted and reported.Attend passenger social events as directed by the Head of Department.Partake in inspections, trainings and meetings as directed by the Head of Department.Ensure direct reports are effectively managed in accordance with Saga and V.Ships appraisal policies; provide accessible support and confidential reporting to the Head of Department as needed.Undertake other shipboard tasks pertaining to departmental operations as directed by Head of Department.Attend trainings and office visits arranged by V.Ships where possible.
